Most important event of 2010

2010 Winter Olympics:

The 2010 Winter Olympics, officially the XXI Olympic Winter Games or the 21st Winter Olympics, were a major international multi-sport event held from February 12–28, 2010 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, with some events held in the suburbs of Richmond, West Vancouver and the University Endowment Lands, and in the resort town of Whistler. Approximately 2,600 athletes from 82 nations participated in 86 events in fifteen disciplines. Both the Olympic and Paralympic Games were being organized by the Vancouver Organizing Committee (VANOC). The 2010 Winter Olympics were the third Olympics hosted by Canada and the first by the province of British Columbia. Previously, Canada hosted the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, Quebec and the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, Alberta.

Following Olympic tradition, then-Vancouver mayor Sam Sullivan received the Olympic flag during the closing ceremony of the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy. The flag was raised on February 28, 2006 in a special ceremony and was on display at Vancouver City Hall until the Olympic opening ceremony. The event was officially opened by Governor General Michaëlle Jean.

For the first time, Canada won gold in an "official" sport at an Olympic Games hosted at home, having failed to do so at both the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal and the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary (although Canada won a gold medal in the "demonstration-sport" of curling in Calgary).

Canada clinched first overall in gold medal wins on the second to last day of competition and became the first host nation since Norway in 1952 to lead the gold medal count. With 14, Canada broke the record for the most gold medals won at a single Winter Olympics, which was 13, set by the former Soviet Union in 1976 and Norway in 2002. The United States won the most medals in total, their second time doing so at the Winter Olympics, and broke the record for the most medals won at a single Winter Olympics, with 37, which was previously held by Germany in 2002 at 36 medals. Athletes from Slovakia and Belarus won the first Winter Olympic gold medals for their nations.

2010 Chile earthquake:

The 2010 Chile earthquake occurred off the coast of the Maule Region of Chile on February 27, 2010, at 03:34 local time (06:34 UTC), rating a magnitude of 8.8 on the moment magnitude scale, and lasting up to 3 minutes. It was felt strongly in six Chilean regions (from Valparaíso in the north to Araucanía in the south), that together make up 80 percent of the country's population. The cities experiencing the strongest shaking—IX (Ruinous) on the Mercalli intensity scale—were Arauco and Coronel, Chile. The earthquake was felt in the capital Santiago at Mercalli intensity scale VIII (Destructive). Tremors were felt in many Argentine cities, including Buenos Aires, Córdoba, Mendoza and La Rioja. Tremors were felt as far north as the city of Ica in southern Peru (approx. 2400 km). The earthquake triggered a tsunami which devastated several coastal towns in south-central Chile and damaged the port at Talcahuano. Tsunami warnings were issued in 53 countries, causing minor damage in the San Diego area of California and in the Tōhoku region of Japan, where damage to the fisheries business was estimated at ¥6.26 billion (USD$66.7 million). The earthquake also generated a blackout that affected 93 percent of the country's population and which went on for several days in some locations.President Michelle Bachelet declared a "state of catastrophe" and sent military troops to take control of the most affected areas. The latest death toll as of May 15, 2010 is 521 victims (down from early reports on March 3 of 802).

The epicenter of the earthquake was at 35.909°S, 72.733°W just offshore from the Maule Region, approximately 11 km (6.8 miles) southwest of Curanipe and 100 km (71 mi) north-northeast of Chile's second largest city, Concepción.

Oil platform:

An offshore platform, also referred to as an oil platform or oil rig, is a lаrge structure with facilities to drill wells and extract and process oil and natural gas and export the products to shore.

Depending on the circumstances, the platform may be fixed to the ocean floor, may consist of an artificial island, or may float.[1]

Remote subsea wells may also be connected to a platform by flow lines and by umbilical connections; these subsea solutions may consist of single wells or of a manifold centre for multiple wells.

2010 FIFA World Cup:

The 2010 FIFA World Cup was the 19th FIFA World Cup, the world championship for men's national association football teams. It took place in South Africa from 11 June to 11 July 2010. The bidding process for hosting the tournament finals was open only to African nations; in 2004, the international football federation, FIFA, selected South Africa over Egypt and Morocco to become the first African nation to host the finals.

The matches were played in ten stadiums in nine host cities around the country, with the final played at the Soccer City stadium in South Africa's largest city, Johannesburg. Thirty-two teams were selected for participation via a worldwide qualification tournament that began in August 2007. In the first round of the tournament finals, the teams competed in round-robin groups of four teams for points, with the top two teams in each group proceeding. These sixteen teams advanced to the knockout stage, where three rounds of play decided which teams would participate in the final.

In the final, Spain, the European champions, defeated third-time finalists the Netherlands 1–0 after extra time, with Andrés Iniesta's goal in the 116th minute giving Spain their first world title, the first time that a European nation has won the tournament outside its home continent. Host nation South Africa, 2006 world champions Italy and 2006 runners-up France were eliminated in the first round of the tournament.

WikiLeaks:

WikiLeaks is an international non-profit organisation that publishes submissions of private, secret, and classified media from anonymous news sources and news leaks. Its website, launched in 2006 and run by The Sunshine Press,[3] claimed a database of more than 1.2 million documents within a year of its launch.[7] The organisation describes its founders as a mix of Chinese dissidents, journalists, mathematicians, and start-up company technologists from the United States, Taiwan, Europe, Australia, and South Africa.[3] Julian Assange, an Australian Internet activist, is generally described as its director.[8] WikiLeaks was originally launched as a user-editable wiki site, but has progressively moved towards a more traditional publication model, and no longer accepts either user comments or edits.

In April 2010, WikiLeaks posted video from a 2007 incident in which Iraqi civilians and journalists were killed by US forces, on a website called Collateral Murder. In July of the same year, WikiLeaks released Afghan War Diary, a compilation of more than 76,900 documents about the War in Afghanistan not previously available for public review.[9] In October 2010, the group released a package of almost 400,000 documents called the Iraq War Logs in coordination with major commercial media organisations. In November 2010, WikiLeaks began releasing U.S. State department diplomatic cables.

WikiLeaks has received praise as well as criticism. The organisation has won a number of awards, including The Economist's New Media Award in 2008[10] and Amnesty International's UK Media Award in 2009.[11][12] In 2010, the New York City Daily News listed WikiLeaks first among websites "that could totally change the news",[13] and Julian Assange was named the Readers' Choice for TIME's Person of the Year in 2010.[14] The UK Information Commissioner has stated that 'WikiLeaks is part of the phenomenon of the online, empowered citizen'.[15] In its first days, an internet petition calling for the cessation of extra-judicial intimidation of WikiLeaks attracted over six hundred thousand signatures.[16] Supporters of Wikileaks in the media have commended it for exposing state and corporate secrets, increasing transparency, supporting freedom of the press, and enhancing democratic discourse while challenging powerful institutions.[17][18][19][20][21][22]

At the same time, several U.S. government officials have criticised WikiLeaks for exposing classified information, harming national security, and compromising international diplomacy.[23][24][25][26][27] Several human rights organisations have requested that WikiLeaks adequately redact the names of civilians working with international forces, in order to prevent repercussions.[28] Some journalists have likewise criticised a perceived lack of editorial discretion when releasing thousands of documents at once and without sufficient analysis.[29] In response to some of the negative reaction, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights has expressed her concern over the 'cyber war' against WikiLeaks,[30] and in a joint statement with the Organization of American States its Special Rapporteur has called on states and other actors to keep international legal principles in mind.[31]

Internet Marketing: Story of the Bamboo Tree

The world of internet marketing and making money online is just like the story of the bamboo tree. It takes lots of time and work in order to see progress but it is necessary for growth. Bamboo takes several years to grow, it will not show any signs of growing for the first several years, but if you stop taking care of it any time during the several years, it will die. If you have kept up with watering and taking care of the bamboo for so long, it will start to show exponential growth. The key is staying around long enough to see it.

Yes, I get that making money online can be a discouraging business. You may put in tons of work, only to see barely any results at all. The question is “Did you give it enough time?” Many people have already been down the path of internet marketing. There is a reason why not everyone is doing it. That’s because it is a hard and unforgiving path. If you have patience and persistance, it will reward you beyond your wildest dreams. But if you do not, you will end up quitting.

That is the wrong mental attitude to take. If you want to see success, you need long term goals. If you only focus on the short term, you’ll just become frustrated. Give it time and let it grow, and you’ll reap the fruits of your labor. It’s hard to discuss the feeling unless you’ve already been on the journey yourself. The human mind is very fickle. It has doubts and fears. It will even sabotage itself if you let it. Cut the bullcrap from your mind and stop overthinking the process. Making money online is possible and the process does work, it just takes time. If you are thinking of quitting, simply remember the story of the bamboo tree.

Things To Consider When Translating Portuguese

A good translation will take into consideration the style of the piece, linguistic connotations and cultural appropriateness. To provide a successful Portuguese translation service for example, it is important to only employ mother-tongue Portuguese translators when translating into Portuguese as this ensures a high level of quality and accuracy.

Portuguese is a language that is spoken all around the world. Although it is officially only one language, there are cultural differences depending on what country you are in. Because of these cultural differences it is important to translate the correct variety of Portuguese in order to be understood and so as not to cause any offence. The differences from country to country are evident not only in pronunciations but also in grammar, vocabulary, spelling and usage.

A Professional translator will understand the variations that exist in the language and will be aware that the main divide lies between European (or Iberian) Portuguese and Brazilian Portuguese. The local variations can stretch as far as African Portuguese speaking countries, although these tend to have more in common with European Portuguese than Brazilian. Some online translation applications may not take these things into consideration and the result will be something that is not accurate and possibly doesn't even make sense. Axis Translations use only qualified translators that understand these issues and work to give you the best content for whatever your needs may be.

To get a Portuguese translation properly done you need to consider a few factors. Firstly, the fact that Brazilian Portuguese is considerably different from the European Portuguese. The differences are clear in the spelling, pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar. Effort has been made by both countries to converge the two varieties in order to make life easily, but this is not to say that a native speaker would notice if the incorrect language was used.

When choosing a translation service to carry out your Portuguese translation you need to bear in mind that professional Portuguese translators will work only with their native variety. Therefore, if you want English to Brazilian Portuguese or vice versa, you need to make sure you work with a Brazilian Portuguese translator. You should also be wary of translators who claim to be able to work with both varieties of Portuguese.

If you are finding it hard to make a decision as to whether you want your material translated into Brazilian Portuguese or European Portuguese then you might be advised to talk with your language translation service provider as they should have experience that they can offer. The circumstances can be highly individual and it would be wrong to set a single rule in place. In many circumstances it can be best to offer both and a good translation service provider should be able to offer costs effective solutions for this option.

The Portuguese language is a very powerful one and is the official language of nine nations in the world, ranking as the sixth most frequently spoken language in the world. The steady development of Brazil and other Portuguese speaking economies has resulted in an increased level of demand for Portuguese translation services.
